"Contemporary American Erotic Photography differs from the numerous compilation style books of photography in several important ways. To begin with, each of the fourteen photographers included in this volume, live and work in the United States. In addition, with few exceptions, the work included here has not been previously published. We have endeavoured to publish a selection of work from each photographer where each was given the possibility of selecting their images for publication, and they were encouraged to contribute to the design of their respective portfolios. What makes this so interesting is the fact that so many of the photographers, this represented their first opportunity to participate in the final selection process and the fashion in which their photographs were presented. As we gave each photographer complete freedom in terms of what he or she held to be erotic, a new definition of contemporary erotic photography was likely to emerge..."
